  • Helmeted Hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil) male perched above a potential nest cavity, while his mate investigates this potential nest site.  Location is a remote, undisclosed forest in West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia, on the island of Borneo.   Nest tree is a large dipterocarp, the usualy choice for Helmeted Hornbills, who need large old trees to find the cavities they need for nesting.  (IMPORTANT NOTE: Indonesian authorities are concerned about revealing nest location in the media because of poaching.  We have committed to not revealing location beyond the province level.)

  • Sole provider for his confined mate and chick, a great pied hornbill in Thailand's Khao Yai National Park delivers as many as 13 fruit and insect meals each day. The female has all but walled up the nest hole to guard against preditors.

Pilai Poonswad and her team captured this hornbill and moved in quickly to extricate it from thrashing and squawking in the net. After measuring the nette d hornbill and strapping a radio transmitter to his back, they returned him to the task of feeding his mate.
